Managing Moss on Your Bocce Court
Moss can creep its way onto damp, shaded, or unused bocce courts including courts made with oyster shell and those with synthetic turf surfaces.
The best defense? Play bocce regularly!

Tools & Supplies
Removal: Sharp shovel, wire deck brush
Treatment: Moss killer, pump sprayer
Renovation: Sifting frame, wheelbarrow, broom

Kill the Moss
- Mix up some DIY moss killer, or use a commercial moss killing product.Â
- Apply on a dry day with no rain expected for 24–48 hours.
- Let sit for 1–2 days before removing the dead moss.
Remove the Moss
- Thick moss? Slice the moss off the surface with a sharp shovel (but don’t dig into the oyster shell layer!)
- Thin moss? Use a wire brush to scrub or sweep it off the court surface.
Restore the Court Surface
Scrape up ½” of oyster shell material where moss was removed using a metal lute.
Sift out the moss debris from the oyster shell material using a sifting frame.
Reapply the clean sifted material to the court and smooth it with a broom.
Lightly spray with water or let rain settle the surface.
Prevent Future Moss Growth
Regular Maintenance: Apply moss-killing solution during dry weather as needed.
Disturb the Surface: Scuff the court surface with a lute, sweep with a broom, and play bocce often!
Increase Sunlight & Airflow: Trim overhanging branches to bring more light and air to the court area.
